Alyce Bowles, 92, was found dead on the living room floor at her home in a gated Sawgrass community in February 2009. Neighbors found her body when they came to check on her after she did not answer her daughter's phone call.

Richard Medeiros, 63, was charged with first-degree murder in her October 2009 slaying. He had already been in jail since July, charged with attacking a Jacksonville Beach real estate agent with a hammer.

Now, new state attorney documents reveal that Medeiros may still have been inside Bowles' home when two neighbors went to check on her. One of the neighbors had a key to her home.

    Video:

According to the documents, the neighbor said, "As he tried to turn the door knob, he felt counter pressure as if someone was working against him holding the door." It says the neighbors also "saw a shadow walk past the living room window."

According to the medical examiner, Bowles died of "blunt force trauma to the head and stab wounds." Documents also revealed she was stabbed 15 times, and that evidence shows she tried to fight off her attacker.

It also shows that the killer placed Bowles' body "on a green blanket" and "rested her head on a towel." It says that tape was also draped across her lower legs.

The documents also show that police found bloody latex gloves and a pocket knife. We have also learned that "Medeiros and his girlfriend at one time lived directly across the street from Bowles."

Detectives were able to match DNA evidence from the crime scene to Medeiros.

Medeiros told investigators he knew Bowles' late husband and did electrical work at the home several years ago. He first denied killing Bowles, then later asked to write a letter to Bowles' family.

In the letter, Medeiros wrote, "I totally accept responsibility for this. Before this happened, I never hurt anyone, but I'm going to remember how and why it happened."

Investigators interviewed Medeiros' sister who lives in Jacksonville. She told them that in June or July 2009 her brother "showed up after 20 years," and said he needed a place to live because his girlfriend kicked him out. She let him stay with her for awhile and then when he moved out he left some property behind.

His sister told investigators she placed the property in storage and was going to return the items if he contacted her in the future.

She did not tell police what the property was, but turned over a blue bin with several items of clothing that police believe are stained with blood.

Medeiros' sister told investigators her brother borrowed her car a few times in February 2009. According to police, she stated that after he brother drove her car she discovered several stains on the carpet and gear shift area which appeared to be blood, but she never cleaned the areas nor did she ask Medeiros about the stains.

Investigators took swabs from the vehicle and the bloody clothing but the documents do not reveal the outcome of crime lab tests.

Detectives asked Medeiros' sister if he had a history of violence. She said "she had seen him become very angry in the past verbally but never physically." When asked if Medeiros ever mentioned the Alyce Bowles homicide, she said he did in February, stating, "some older person was murdered in Sawgrass by his ex-girlfriend's house."

Police asked her if Medeiros could have been involved and she stated, "I wouldn't be surprised if he was."

Medeiros' next court date is March 17.
