Controversy in the River City.. Red light cameras. Tonight -- accusations that companies supplying the cameras -- are bribing public officials. 3 The company that contracts with Duval County for red light cameras is in hot water after a story out of Chicago where they're accused of bribing public officials to install the cameras. The story broke just about the same time new cameras are being installed on Blanding Boulevard. Channel 4's Scott Johnson has been looking into this company as well as other red-light contractors who deal with Florida counties. Scott's joining us live .. the bribery scandal has raised a lot of eyebrows... but as we've learned in recent weeks this red light camera trend is big business. 40-44Another red light camera about to go in here at blanding boulevard and youngerman circle...the next round of cameras to pepper jacksonville roads...but as more pop up...more questions pop up about the companies that contract with cities to put in these red light cameras. The latest controversy stems from a company called Redflex which contracts with the city of jacksonville for its cameras. That company is now at the center of a lawsuit where they're accused of bribing city officials in different parts of the country where cameras exist. The suit brings up a meeting with city leaders in 2006...well before jacksonville decided to install cameras.drivers were a little rattled by this revelation.Bill DeConna/DRIVER 21:45:47 - that's disturbing. I guess that's what can happen when those knids of controls are put in place. There's always opportunity for abuse. So that's disturbing the jacksonville sheriff's office has responded to this story telling channel 4 "Sheriff Rutherford does not recall attending the dinner or breakfast meeting referenced in the claim, nor does he have any documents regarding such meetings".This isn't making drivers happy who are already leery of the cameras.21:47:28 - I think they use them out of context sometimes.'why is that?' Because I see them go off and no one is in intersection. They're cheating the system a little bit.and this isn't the first time in recent weeks a redlight camera contractor has made news... only weeks ago we brought you the story of American Traffic Solutions an arizona company that contracts the lights for clay county. They put out statistics about how the cameras were improving public safety. The stats were immediately questioned by local state representative janet adkins who is fighting red light cameras.:41 - to say that when you have such a small data sample... in such a short amount of time red light cameras have been in florida... to say that it's all because of red light cameras is disingenuous and wrong. 3 Scott, back to the bribery scandal. What is the nature of this lawsuit? Who filed it?
