Now .. new information in a Channel 4 investigation. Families with loved ones buried in the troubled Restlawn Cemetery on the northside say they have new hope that over time ... the dead will be able to rest in peace. We broke the story last week that as many as 2-thousand bodies may have been buried under a road instead of in plots. We've been following this story since last Friday. Many of you have been contacting us .. saying you are counting on the new owner to correct the mistakes made by the previous owner. Today, two families spoke with Channel 4's Tarik Minor who is joining us now with an update .. Tarik. 3 3 3 We are assembling pictures of some of the people who have had problems with Restlawn Cemetery. Some of those ...are buried in the wrong plot. Others were scheduled to buried in the cemetery, but in the midst of their families grief they had to arrange for their families to be buried elsewhere. And the families have been contacting us. 3 00-051'22PKG - 08:50:28"We're very glad to see there's new ownership, because it now it seems like there's new hope."For the 1st time in decades, Nadine Powell says she and her 91 mother in law, are feeling optimistic about Restlawn Cemetery. She says her mother in law Annie Smith purchased 4 plots in the 1970's, only to learn somone else had been buried in Smith ' s reserved grave.08:46:07"he said a metal stick that was stuck down in the grave, and he said, ma'am i'm sorry, somebody is buried there, so we were very shocked to hear that."Powell says even though paid in full and was given a deed, the former owners gave her the runaround. She says she learned that those owners were a not for profit religious organization, who were exempt from state laws. 08:48:43"that was shocking because no one knew that, most people think all cemeteries are under some regulation."State officials advise, that while choosing a cemetery for your loved one, find out who owns the property, and inquire how their regulated by the state. Some religious, municipall and even national cemeteries, don't fall under the state of Florida's purview. 08:55:04"they pretty much told us their hands were tied, we asked for the escrow account back.Sharon Murphy found herself in the same situation, following thedeath of her husband Ron Murphy in 2012. 4 days after he died, the family went to check on his plot, and learned someone else had been buried there, and her $7000 in escrow was gone.08:55:12"we asked for our funds and she said our find s are frozen and that I'd have to file a claim with the state." 3 We asked the new owner of the Restlawn Cemetery whether or not he can refund escrow accounts from the former owner, he told me, they will be unable to return the funds that were given to the other company, but what he can do is provide the services that the families have already paid for.
