Good evening. The Riverwalk was built in the 19-80's ...and it attracted businesses and people to the area. But this is the last week the entire Riverwalk will be open ...the city is getting ready to tear it down. It will be built back UP ... replaced with a concrete structure. Channel 4's Jim Piggott... who's been looking into the riverwalk problems for years... Found yet another problem...There MAY not not be enough money to finish the whole thing. He joins us now 3 3 04-1113-2059-1'091'30-1'35Some are getting their last look of the riverwalk before demotion begins..Personally I don't see what the issue is .It's been here over a decade and I don't see the point of tearing it down you know kids use this to chill out Actually its been around for nearly three decades.. And we've document numerous safety problems for over 13 years...It may seem demolition won't take long since a lot of this is already in decay.. But the plan is to start near friendship fountain and tear down the two buildings one that housed the maritime museum. they will be the first to go. then they will will take down the boardwalk..closing it off in segments starting next week There will be significant construction out here We want people to know we are dealing with a Riverwalk, the river and adjacent land .It's expected to take a year.. to complete..and by this time next september.. this is what we could end up with.. a concrete structure similar to what is along the northbank.. except for the area near the Crown Plaza Hotel ..that will remain a wooden structure .. You know they set aside 15 million dollars to do all of this but one thing we are learning today is that may not be enough money and this part of the riverwalk from here down to the school board may not be done... that's right the area west of the Windom hotel to the school board could be left out.. The Haskell company has guaranteed the price wont go over 15 million.. but cost of the materials since this has been delayed have now increased ... so its likely they wont be able to complete the entire project As we balance the budget and review the material cost that continue to rise and other factors. We will decide if we do the full extension to the duval county school board building. 3 Jim ... you mentioned the work on the Riverwalk will be done in segments ...HOW will it affect people who rely on the River Taxi... like those going to the jaguars games?
