Police have identified the man shot and killed by a citizen he was attempting to rob early Saturday morning by a citizen as 20-year-old Timmie Johnson.
The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of 13th Avenue and Interstate 95. The potential victim told an off-duty officer he flagged down that the man tried to rob him, they got into a gun battle and he believed he shot the robber.
Police found Johnson dead behind a house near West 13th Street and Thames Avenue. He appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and officers said a handgun was lying next to the body.
"A witness approached officers and stated that he was with the shooter sitting in a car when a black male approached with a gun and demanded money," said Bujeda. "The witness stated that as he fled, he heard numerous gun shots."
Police said the man who flagged down the officers had a concealed weapons permit and turned over his weapon to police.
According to a jail records, Johnson was arrested twice earlier this year on marijuana and cocaine possession charges and loitering or prowling.
