JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the man they said robbed a Family Dollar store on the Northside and was shot by police after investigators said he came outside with a gun.

Police said Awar Kareen Browder, of Jacksonville, robbed the store at the corner of Clyde Street and Lem Turner Road.

Police responded to reports of a robbery and had the building surrounded when Browder walked out the back door with a gun, according to JSO Director Dwain Senterfitt.

Senterfitt said Officer Eric Long fired several shots at the suspect. It's not clear if Browder fired back.

Officers said Browder, 31, was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At a news conference Sunday, detectives released more information about Browder, a convicted sex offender with several prior arrests.

He was absentee booked into the Duval County jail and ordered held on $750,000 bond.

This was the 12th police-involved shooting in Jacksonville this year.
