A man was killed while apparently trying to rob two other men Saturday morning, according to police.
Melissa Bujeda, with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, said an off-duty officer was flagged down by a man around 3:30 a.m. near the intersection of 13th Avenue and Interstate 95. The man said someone tried to rob him, they got into a gun battle and he believed he shot the robber.
Police found a man dead behind a house near West 13th Street and Thames Avenue. He appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and officers said a handgun was lying next to the body.
"A witness approached officers and stated that he was with the shooter sitting in a car when a black male approached with a gun and demanded money," said Bujeda. "The witness stated that as he fled, he heard numerous gun shots."
Police said the man who flagged down the officers had a concealed weapons permit and turned over his weapon to police.
