Good evening. The plane crash that killed three people near Craig airport has reminded some people of a fight that has gone on for decades..whether to make the airport's runway LONGER. On Sunday night, a Cessna 310 from Fort Pierce crashed into a retention pond in the Sutton Lakes neighborhood because of a missed approach at Craig. The Pilot, Michael Huber and his two daughters died in the crash. Their funeral will take place this Sunday, at a synagogue in Port St. Lucie. They will then be buried at a cemetery in Fort Pierce. Channel 4's Scott Johnson spoke to people about an expanded runway and how it would impact crashes around craig airport... Scott? 3 3 3 3 00-0811-171'10-1'18 this weekend's crash brought up an old controversy that eventually could come back... and that's the size of the runways at craig airfield... Dianne Wiles fought for years agasint the expansion until it was dropped around five years ago.DIANNE WILES/LIVES NEAR CRAIG AIRPORT 22:03:53 - they say it's always been about the noise. Personally it's been about safety for me and all my neighbors. And this is exactly why. This is a very small plane...you extend the runway , you've got bigger jets coming in...natural gas out there, could've been a real tragedy.now Wiles says she's hearing rumblings another push may come to expand the airport ... and after this weekend's crash Wiles says the last thing this area needs is more planes overhead.DIANNE WILES 22:04:17 - extending ht erunway allows bigger planes and more planes. And there's built up neighborhoods around there.. those neighborhoods will be there for an extended runway. Despite rumors that this could come up again... the jacksonivlle aviation authority tells me it's simply "not in the plans at this time".I also cuaght up with Morgan Miller. He's former general manager at craig airport. He thinks the project is a good idea... and would actually make the area safer. MORGAN MILLER/FORMER CRAIG AIRPORT GENERAL MANAGER 22:17:06 - I believe it's the right answer for the community around with safety. not just he pilots but community, I don't want a plane in trouble flying around my head. While Wiles was concerned about safety with more planes flying in and out...Morgan says expanding the runway is what craig airport needs...he says the runways now are outdated and too short..MORGAN MILLER/FORMER CRAIG AIRPORT GENERAL MANAGER 22:16:10 - there's a point in which a plane must make a decision whether to start or stop and that decision needs to be made with such a short distance of runway that there's no time to stop an engine, you need to take to air and go back around. 3 Scott, there has been a lot of development in this area in recent years... much more than when this first started to be an issue back in the 1960's. Does that play a role in whether the runway can be extended?
