SC college football player found unconscious, dies
Investigators called in after Presbyterian College player died
St. Augustine football player dies in S.C. frat house
South Carolina investigators are looking into the death of a Presbyterian College student and football player.
University spokesman Hal Milam says a fellow student found 21-year-old Kyle Allen of St. Augustine, Fla., unconscious in a fraternity house early Sunday. Allen was taken to Laurens County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols is investigating the death with the State Law Enforcement Division, which is notified whenever there is a death on a college campus. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.
The university's athletic website says Allen was a 5-foot-10, 180-pound linebacker who was redshirted in 2010 after transferring from Georgia Southern.
The website, gobluehose.com said Allen was in his second year at PC after transferring in 2010 from Georgia Southern.
"The entire football program and Presbyterian College is grieving," said Football Head Coach Harold Nichols. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lucy Allen, Kyle's mother, whom I spoke with on the phone this morning. It is a trying time for all of us, but our main concern right now is supporting Kyle's mother and his family through this difficult grieving process. Kyle was an exemplarily athlete and hard worker, well-respected by his teammates and coaching staff and he will be sorely missed."
His football coach at St. Augustine's Pedro Menendez High School, Keith Cromwell, said he knew Allen was special from the first time he stepped onto the field.
"One of the best football players I've coached in my 20 plus years," Cromwell said. "Off the field he was ea even better person. Better student, better son, and just somebody I loved."
Cromwell said Allen's family is in South Carolina right now and he has a younger brother who is a senior at Menendez this year. He, too, was a linebacker and wore his brother's number.
A linebacker, and two-year team captain, Allen led the squad to its first winning season, and then its first playoff berth. After graduating, he walked on to Georgia Southern's football team, before transferring to Presbyterian College.
Allen played in all 11 games this past season after redshirting in 2010. He recorded eight total tackles, seven of which were assisted. The redshirt sophomore had an assisted tackle against VMI and two total tackles (1-1) at Coastal Carolina. Allen, a business administration major, recorded an assisted tackle at Furman and posted two assisted tackles against North Greenville and California.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later this week. Presbyterian College's athletic staff said they will bring all 80 players down to St. Augustine to pay their respects.
