School principal shot in attempted murder-suicide
Police say ex-husband found dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound
The 44-year-old principal of a Westside elementary school is recovering from two gunshot wounds. Police say she was shot by her ex-husband before he shot and killed himself.
The double shooting happened in Memorial Park on Riverside Avenue just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
"I know I am shocked, that's terrible," said Diane Henderson, whose children attend Whitehouse Elementary.
According to a police report, Marie Antoine was shot by 47-year-old David Kite, who then killed himself. Antoine was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Friends told Channel 4 she is in serious condition.
Court records show the couple divorced in 2009.
"We just heard that her husband shot her," said Joyce Daugherty. Daugherty works across the street from Whitehouse Elementary at a daycare. Daugherty said a lot of the children she cares for attend the school.
Antoine had been principal of Whitehouse Elementary School, but was recently transferred to Cedar Hills Elementary School.
"The Duval Schools family is sending our warmest thoughts for a speedy recovery," Duval County School District spokeswoman Jill Johnson said. "Marie is a dedicated administrator and we look forward to her return."
"You never think it would hit you at home, she loved the kids over there and all," said Daugherty. "You just never think it would be this close."
"I know she's a great principal here, I have three kids going here, so that's really sad, they love the school," said parent, Sheryl McGowan.
