A 20-year-old St. Johns County man was arrested Thursday on charges of burglary, grand theft, dealing in stolen property, exploitation of the elderly and defrauding a pawn broker, according to authorities.
The suspect, identified as Andrew Michael Schmidt was booked into the St. Johns County Jail and will have a first appearance hearing Friday morning, authorities said.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office said Schmidt, who was working as a security guard at the Glenmoor Retirement Community on Towerview Drive, is charged with allegedly stealing numerous pieces of jewelry, silver coins and bars, and currency from an 82-year old resident. The suspect allegedly took the items over a three-month period and pawned the items at three different pawn shops in the St. Augustine area, deputies said.
The investigation began on December 24th, when the victim noticed several pieces of jewelry missing from a jewelry box in his bedroom over a period of time and contacted the Sheriff’s Office, investigators said.
Detectives said they discovered that the suspect, who was employed at the retirement community, had pawned several items that matched the description of items belonging to the victim. The suspect was located Thursday and brought in for questioning before he was arrested, deputies said.
Detectives said they have also discovered additional property that has been pawned by the suspect in which the victims have not yet been identified.
Additional charges are pending further investigation.
