A Senate committee unanimously confirmed Barry Gilway's appointment to head the state-created Citizens Property Insurance Corp.

But members of the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee wanted assurance first that he was handling complaints about excessive spending at the insurer of last resort.

Gilway met with the committee for more than 90 minutes before it gave his approval.

Gilway took over the agency nine months ago and immediately had to deal with criticism about lavish spending on travel and meals. While he admitted he did a poor job of handling media inquiries, he said that he has taking action to ensure Citizens is known to have "the highest standards of transparency, ethics and integrity."
