Good evening. The mother of Terrese Stevens spoke publicly after today's hearing... she supports the death sentence the jury has already recommended for Rodney Newberry. Newberry was found guilty of robbing and killing Stevens... whose family and friends called "Pernell." The murder happened back in 2009, outside a nightclub on North Pearl Street. Channel 4's Ashley Harding was inside the courtroom today, when a sentencing date was set for Newberry. Ashley joins us now from our newsroom ... Ashley? 3 3 3 Yes, the sentencing date has been scheduled for April 4th. But that's not all that happened.Today was also what is known as a "spencer" hearing. That's where the defense or the state brings forward evidence which they feel could argue in favor of a life sentence or the death penalty. Today, Newberry's attorneys mentioned that he, too, had once been a victim of gun violence. They also submitted some school records, giving a glimpse into his past. 3 00-1021-2759-1'071'20- 1'27TRACK Rodney Newberry showed no emotion in court today as his attorneys entered evidence in the sentencing phase of his case. Newberry could face the death penalty for shooting and killing Terrese Pernell Stevens back in 2009.For the first time ever, Stevens' mother spoke out publicly about her son. 52:42--52:56 "I pointed out the fact that at an early age, when he was 14 or 15, one of the counselors noted that he was a 'frustrated, angry teenager'. I think that is kind of telling of what he ended up doing."TRACK Also in the courtroom today was Pastor Kenneth Adkins, who has said there needs to be harsher punishment in black-on-black crimes.19:47--20:05 "it almost--it appears like life and more importantly, in this particular instance, black life has no value. I think among African-Americans, among black people, black people have no life, have no value. I think they need to understand, if you take a life, you're going to pay with your life."TRACK The judge will decide Newberry's fate next month. Again, Rodney Newberry will be sentenced by a judge next month. His victim's family, also wanted us to know that Pernell Stevens leaves behind two young children. 3 Ashley, has Stevens' family said if they'll be there next month for the sentencing hearing.Answer: Absolutely, they intend to be there.They've attended the court hearings throughout this entire process.
