ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

A St. Augustine man was in critical condition Monday morning after he hit a road sign, which impaled the top of his car and struck him in the head, according to Florida Highway Patrol. He was later released from the hospital.

Leslie Richard Newton, 63, was traveling down State Road 16 late Sunday night. He struck the median curb, hit several plastic reflectors and a road sign, according to the FHP report.

The road sign went through Newton's Chevy Camaro T-top and hit him in the head, according to investigators in St. Johns County.

Newton continued east on SR-16 and turned north onto U.S. 1. Deputies from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office saw him and pulled him over.

Newton was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in critical condition.

Alcohol was expected to be a factor, according to the FHP report.
