A reminder for parents tonight... Now that school is out and summer is officially here...Technically, kids are on curfew by the city! Channel 4's Ashley Harding joins us now with more on the curfew law in Jacksonville. Ashley, do police really enforce this? 3 3 Yes, they certainly do, Kent! It comes in the form of a verbal warning to parents or guardians of any minor who violates curfew. So basically, if they're not with an adult, kids need to be in by 11. Or else... 3 :00-:05:19-:26 :51-1:001:24- 1:331:45-1:51///Nats song playing "School's out for summer!"It's that time of year again. There's no school and kids are out and about, oftentimes without a parent or legal guardian. The city of Jacksonville says they áhaveá to be in before it gets real late."After 11 o'clock, I'm sorry there's nothing that any young lady or young man should be doing out and about on their own." Under the curfew law, kids under 18 cannot be out past 11 o'clock without an adult.Authorities say it's all about keeping parents aware and kids out of danger. That's something Kim Chandler agrees with."11 and after just opens up the spectrum for them to be harmed and to get into trouble."Standup: "one of the things Publix is known for is they tend to hire teenagers to do part-time work, and that includes summer vacation. So, if a child were to come home late from work, that's one of the exceptions to this law." Other exceptions include a child coming home late from other school, club or religious activities.Being out after 11:00 is okay if you're with a parent or legal guardian On weekends, curfew shifts to midnight. It may seem like a difficult law to enforce, but our crime and safety analyst Ken Jefferson says police are always keeping an eye out for kids."they monitor the city. They monitor areas and you know, these kids aren't just out joyriding. They usually frequent certain type places, the police know where those places are."Again, the message is: keep kids inside, out of trouble, and away from crime. Obeying the curfew is something 15-year old MaKayla Chandler intends to do. "my curfew is actually 10, in my bed, in my room. So I pretty much agree with it." 3 Another thing to come in mind, we're not just talking about a verbal warning. Police tell me each incident is documented on a standard investigation report. Again, weekend curfew goes until midnight. 3 3 midnight. Ashley, any idea of how many of these verbal warnings police give out?Answer:Kent, I asked JSO to check on that at least in terms of this past year. I'm still waiting to hear back from them, but again, they say they will be enforcing this and parents need to know that.
