Supervisor of Elections looks for new office
Different choices for SOE could save money
The debate over where to relocate the Supervisor of Elections Office has been narrowed down to three spots.
"Now we have three and I think we should evaluate all to see what's best deal for the city," said City Councilman Matt Schellenberg.
Schellenberg is pushing forward legislation to find a new home for the SOE, which is currently located in the Gateway Mall. Schellenberg told Channel 4 that the man has not been the greatest landlord for the city.
Schellenberg said he thinks a move to one of two spots, either Southgate Plaza or at a site on Imeson Place, would be beneficial.
"Have they lowered rent to what they said they might do, and have they done improvements? The answer is 'no' to either of them," said Schellenberg.
Some supporters said the Imeson site will save taxpayers more than $600K a year, but not everyone feels that way. City Councilman John Crescimbeni told Channel 4 earlier this year that the current location has its benefits and he was surprised by the Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland's desire to look at other sites.
"We've spent a lot of money, not just on rent but millions on renovations," Crescimbeni said in January. "And we've only been there 6 years, now he wants to do something different, I find that a little bit upsetting."
Holland has been vocal in the past about the conditions at the Gateway site.
"Whichever one they determine is best deal for the taxpayers, we support that," said Holland.
