ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

The driver of a Yellow cab was beaten and chased through a convenience store early Thursday morning before his attacker sped off in the cab and crashed it a short distance away on King Street, according to St. Augustine police.

Police say Eugene Wilson, 23, of Warner Robbins, Ga., was seen on surveillance video hitting and kicking the driver inside the cab about 5:35 a.m. in the parking lot of Carmelo's Marketplace.  Police said the driver ran into the store and threw his moneybag to the clerk on duty.

Officers say the video shows Wilson also entering the store and chasing the driver until a second Yellow Cab driver arrives, who is also attacked by Wilson.

According to police, Wilson leaves the store empty handed and drives off in one of the cabs.  An officer sees the vehicle westbound on King Street and soon finds the cab had missed a curve near North Orange Street crashed into a utility pole.

Wilson was taken to Flagler Hospital by St. Johns County Fire-Rescue personnel, who saw the wreck as they were en route to the assault call at the convenience store.   He was in stable condition and remained hospitalized Thursday afternoon.

Police say Wilson will be changed with two counts of battery, and one count each of motor vehicle theft and attempted robbery.
