A former Duval County school teacher convicted of sexually abusing one of his former students was sentenced Tuesday to 60 years in prison.
Robert Luke, 37, was convicted in May on two counts of sexual battery.
Between March 2006 and September 2007, Luke, who taught math at Lake Shore Middle School, sexually abused a boy younger than 16, prosecutors said.
"Our office remains committed to ensuring that those who violate our trust are swiftly and severely punished for that betrayal," said Assistant State Attorney Alan Mizrahi.
Jessica Narducci also prosecuted the case.
Luke's case and the case against Christopher Bacca, another teacher recently arrested on child sexual abuse charges, have prompted the Duval County School District to rethink teacher background checks and ways to better protect students.
