Within the last 5 years...4 local children have collapsed on a ballfield or in school and gone into sudden cardiac arrest.2 of them died...because there's wasn't one of these nearby. An automated external defibrillator- an AED. The other two students...WERE saved- because their school had one and used it on them. During a series of stories we've been reporting since February- we have learned that teachers in Duval county are NOT required to be trained in CPR.AND few elementary schools here in Duval have these devices on campus. A local couple saw my story...and is now doing something about it...they donated one of these to an elementary school here in Jacksonville. This week- the teachers learned how to use it. 3 0-518-21116-125143-151207-216 TC:48:55 WHEN YOU LEAVE HERE TODAY I AM CONFIDENT THAT IF A STUDENT, OR TEACHER OF VISITOR EVER GOES DOWN IN SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST THAT WILL YOU KNOW WHAT DO.) Firefighter Stuart Sullivan is now teaching...teachers at Atlantic Beach elementary school- HOW TO USE this AED.) TAKE THE PADS APART YOU PUT THEM ON THE PATIENT HERE, AND HERE SO THEY'LL BE UNCONSCIOUS LAYING DOWN, FACE UP NOW CONNECTED THEM TO THE DEVICE.) Sullivan knows how important the AED training is..he was there the day- one of his baseball players- Andrew Cohn was running during a game and another player's elbow hit him in the chest.Andrew went into sudden cardiac arrest and died at the westside field. He was just 15 years old.Andrew's parents donated this AED to Atlantic Beach Elementary school...and donate many...many a year to any school or community that needs one.) WHEN IT HAPPENS EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT IT AND LEARN ABOUT, WELL I WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT IT AND LEARN ABOUT IT BEFORE IT HAPPENS.) These educators...excited to learn what to DO in case a child or parent...ever collapses at their school. ) IF A STUDENT IS IN SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST WE ONLY HAVE BETWEEN 3 and 5 MINUTES TO SAVE THAT STUDENTS LIFE AND IF WE HAVE AS MANY PEOPLE ON CAMPUS WHO KNOW HOW TO USE THE AED WE CAN SAVE THE CHILD.) STAY CALM FOLLOW THIS VOICE INSTRUCTION.It's a machine that could have saved 18 year old phillip jackson. The sandalwood basketball player went into sudden cardiac arrest during a game and died 5 years old. ) HOW EASY WAS IT TO LEARN THIS INFORMATION? IT WAS VERY EASY, THE MACHINE SEEMS VERY ACCESSible TO ANYONE WHO OPENS IT UP AND USES IT AND THAT GIVEs US A CHANCE TO SAVE A LIFE.TC:1:08:44 HOW DOES IT FEEL AS A TEACHER, WE THINK ALL THE TIME ABOUT EDUCATING KIDS ABOUT READING AND MATH, BUT THE REALITY IS YOU NEVER KNOW what COULD HAPPEN IN YOUR CLASSROOM? ABSOLUTeLY NOT, I THINK TEACHES THAT WE have TO BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING I WAS SHOCKE DOT KNOW THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE HAD CARDIAC ARrEST Due TO THE BLOWS TO THE HEART OR GENETIC COMPoNeNTS, but even though THEY'RE KIDS WE NEED TO KEEP IN MIND THEY STILL CAN HAVE SERIOUS HEART TRAUMA. That's the reality we just don't know if our child has an enlarged heart...or some kind of undiagnosed heart condition that could make them susceptible to sudden cardiac arrest because that's just not something that MOST yearly physicals are going to detect UNLESS a child has an E-K- G...which is only given if your child has symptoms. This happens more than we think.... this is video from my interview last January with a 17 year old basketball player in St. Johns county and her parents- Megan Leitner went into sudden cardiac arrest during a game- she was saved because her private saved because her private school has an AED.I have also heard from two different sources that an elementary school child here in Duval county died last summer during summer school from what I'm told was a heart event ...but the school district will not release any information about the student citing privacy concerns. It's important that anywhere children gather...ball fields- schools...ask questions- what if they collapse- what will you do? These AEDs are available for sale...and I know of at least two and I know of at least two organizations that donate them for free. One of those is AED alliance...started by Andrew Cohn's parents. 3 . 3 .
