Teen Faces 9 Charges In Fatal Wreck
15-Year-Old Charged In Wreck That Killed 4 Friends
Published On: Oct 14 2011 02:32:36 PM EDT Updated On: Aug 25 2009 07:19:00 AM EDTCharges were filed Monday afternoon against the 15-year-old driver whose SUV wrecked on Interstate 295 in June, killing four teens.
Brandon Hodges was charged with four counts of driving without a license causing death, four counts of driving without a license causing serious bodily injury and careless driving -- a total of nine counts, eight of which are felonies.
Hodges turned himself in to police Monday just before 7 p.m.
He was to be fingerprinted, booked and then taken to the juvenile jail, where he was to spend the night. He will make first appearance in juvenile court Tuesday at 9 a.m.
"There was not a warrant out for his arrest," Hodges' defense attorney Duke Fagan said. "The officer who investigated the case had determined that there was probable cause, in her opinion -- let me emphasize -- her opinion."
A number of people gathered outside the jail to give their opinion on what should happen to the 15-year-old.
Friends and family said they were there to show their support. They did not feel he should go to jail, even for just one night.
"Driving without a license, maybe, driving underage, yeah, but that I think should be the extent of it," said Shari Balog, who was there in support of Hodges. "He's been through enough."
Hodges' aunt, Bobi Cato, said she didn't think he should be charged.
"He shouldn't be getting in trouble for it," Cato said. "It would have happened to anybody. Anybody else who would've been driving it would've happened to. He's a good kid. I don't agree with this. Not one bit."
Florida Highway Patrol investigators said Hodges was driving an SUV on I-295 in June when a tire blew, flipping the SUV filled with nine teens. Investigators said Monday they estimated Hodges was going about 70 mph.
Hodges did not have a license to drive.
Killed in the crash were 15-year-old John Kiely, 15-year-old Kimber Krebs and 17-year-old Dennis Stout. Erin Hurst, 15, died two weeks later at the hospital.
The fatal wreck happened on the last day of school in June when the group of students from Ed White skipped school and were on their way to the beach.
They all crammed into the SUV but didn't get very far.
The vehicle, loaded with nine students, blew a tire, rolling over on I-295 near Pritchard Road.
Hodges survived the crash with minor injuries. Police said he was the only one wearing a seat belt.
Four other students died and four more were seriously hurt.
