3 Good evening everyone. Just this morning in St Johns County, a 15 year old girl was hit by a tire as she was walking along Woodlawn Road. Channel 4's Chris Parenteau joins us live with more on these incidents and what experts say drivers can do to make sure this doesn't happen to their cars. Chris... 3 The incident this morning could have been much worse. The 15 year old girl was walking to school when the tire came off the pickup truck and hit the teen, who was taken to Flagler Hospital with only minor injuries. I talked to a mechanic today who said this problem happens more than you would think. 00-0511-179:26 You'd be surprised. A ball joint can break. Stuff like that. It happens all the time. We probably get at least once a month where a wheel has broken free in some way or another. VO John Warren, the owner of John's Automotive in Arlington sees cars that come into his shop with tire problems, either caused by worn out bearings or ball joints. He says that for a problem that might cause a tire to fall off, you would almost certainly need a professional to discover it. SOT 9:50 You would have to have to wheel off the ground to notice it.It would have to be real bad with the wheel leaning in for you yourself to notice it. VO On Monday, the front wheel of this 1999 Toyota broke off the car and went through the front of a building, killing one man and injuring another. This morning in St Johns County, the tire came off the front passenger side of this ford pickup truck. Warren says only a few things can cause this to happen.SOT 9:14 Just lack of maintenance. Wheel bearings and stuff like that can cause a wheel to fall off and be very dangerous. 10:40 Usually it's not the axle itself that is the problem. It's the wheel bearing that causes the axle problem. I spoke with the Chief of the Williston Police Department and a spokesperson for the St Johns County Sheriff's Office to ask if the driver of either vehicle had recently had work done on the car. Both said that is all part of their investigations, both of which are still ongoing. Chris, did the mechanic you spoke to say how often people should have their cars checked to make sure tire issues like this don't happen to them?
