A 17-year-old facing trial for murder in the death of a 13-month-old girl pleaded guilty Monday just before jury selection was to begin.
According to the State Attorney's Office, Javarris Lane pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and sexual battery on a child under 12.
Lane was watching Alexandria Williams, a friend of the family, at his home on West First Street in September 2011 when investigator say he shook the crying toddler, hit her head multiple times on a dresser and sexually abused the girl. She died days after her injuries.
"I’m relieved the family does not have to go through a trial and hear the facts about what happened to little Alexandria," said Assistant State Attorney Janeen Mira.
Lane faces life in prison. His sentencing date will set at a hearing next month.
