JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The lawyer for one of two teenagers charged with killing their classmate said in court Thursday his client can't afford to pay for his defense.

Charles Southern's lawyer said the 17-year-old is claiming indigency. The defense has also waived his right to a speedy trial.

Southern and 16-year-old Connor Pridgen were arrested in February after 17-year-old Makia Coney's body was found in a ditch off Powers Avenue. Police found Coney shot in the head hours after she was reported missing from University Christian School.

Thursday's developments come just one day after prosecutors released new documents in the case detailing what led to Coney's slaying.

Some of those documents state Southern and Coney had an on-again, off-again relationship.

Several of Southern's friends told police that he'd talked about killing someone and would like to know what it felt like, according to the documents.

Surveillance video showed Pridgen walking with Coney the day she disappeared, according to the documents. In the video, Coney was wearing the same clothes she was later found wearing.

A motive for Coney's killing is still unclear.

Both teens have pleaded not guilty. They are being held without bond in the Duval County Jail.
