A Fernandina Beach man is accused of defrauding a Clay County business. He was arrested and charged with schemes to defraud and petit theft.
Earlier this month, sheriff's deputies said Robert Hyers, 41, called an Orange County business and said he was towing a car that belonged to the business next door. Hyers told the first business owner that the employees next door were not in, so if he would cover the $85 tow bill, he would be reimbursed later, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.
The business owner paid Hyers $85 cash and was given a bogus receipt for the towing service, deputies said. They said when the victim became suspicious, he called the number back that initially called him, and it was for a nearby convenience store.
When the victim called the Sheriff's Office, investigators said Hyers had a committed similar crime at Sweet Tomatoes at 1625 Wells Road.
He is currently being held in the Nassau County jail.
