3 This morning we are starting our Project 4: tracking crime in your neighborhood. All day...we will be in your part of town...with a list of crimes reported...where you live. We'll also show you what's being done to keep your family safe. This morning, vic micolucci shows us what you can expect all day today on channel 4. 3 0 - 6 208 - 212 Crime...it's everywhere...near where we work...where our kids go to school ...and where we live ...it can be the single most scary thing in our community ... But just how bad is it where you live? I poured through thousands of numbers ...10s of thousands of crime reports...to find out... In Jacksonville, the sheriff's office tracks them on a mapping program... We looked at all the reports of crimes so far this year and were astounded at the sheer number... More than 3-thousand of the crimes reported city-wide could be considered violent...and so far this year ...police say there have been 73 murders.Nearly 10 percent of all Florida murders last year happened in Duval County last year... That's the second most in the state...only behind Miami-Dade. Other agencies gave us their numbers too...St. Johns County broke them down by sections... And the Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its report with last year's numbers. We found that in Duval County the crime rate was highest in Jacksonville Beach...their police also had the lowest number of cases cleared. The city of Jacksonville had a the second highest crime rate last year...and Neptune and Atlantic Beaches had the lowest ... In St. Johns County...the historic city of St. Augustine led the pack with the highest crime rate... followed by St.Augustine Beach...and all other areas in the county. The most common crimes reported in our area were car break-ins.. thefts...home burglaries and assaults. Robberies, carjackings, and assaults where someone was badly hurt topped the list of violent crimes. As part of Project 4 ...we're not just telling you about the crime in your area... we're showing you how cops are trying to prevent it ....how the community is stepping up ....and how you can keep it from happening to your family. Each hour...all day...we'll pick a new neighborhood...and break down the statistics that matter to you. For now, I'm Vic Micolucci, Ch4, TLS. 3 TLS.Micolucci, Ch4, TLS.
