They sacrificed their lives in order to serve and protect ours... Today, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office held its annual memorial to honor those who died in the line of duty. A 21 gun salute and a missing man flyover were just some of the ways officers, family and friends paid tribute.) The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office honor guard called out the name of each fallen officer.While this day to dedicate our heroes is chosen once a year, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says they are remembered every day.Angela Corey, State Attorney 04: 23 it reminds the public that these men and women put their lives on the line every single day especially the week after we've had two officers shot at in basically a 7 day time period we can't have that.One of those officers was Andrew Benson. He was shot in the shoulder during a routine traffic stop last week. Sheriff Rutherford reflected on the conversation he had with Officer Benson in the hospital.01:56 This has been a crazy day you know after he had been shot in the arm and laying a hospital bed and I said yea but it started out like any other day and he said yea you are absolutely right. Officers from Clay and St. Johns Counties were also at the ceremony to support the fallen Jacksonville officers. 07:37 Our brother and sisters in blue, brown, green, whatever color not only are they our family but their family is our family as well There will also be a memorial in the state capitol this weekend, St. Johns County will remember their fallen on the 7th and National Police Week is celebrated in Washington DC- May 11th through the 17th.
