Tuesday's Lightning Kills Sailor, Starts Three Fires
Published On: Oct 14 2011 02:32:40 PM EDT Updated On: Jul 14 2004 11:40:22 AM EDTLightning from a midafternoon thunderstorm Tuesday is blamed for killing a sailor at NAS Jacksonville and starting three fires in Clay County.
The Navy said a sailor was struck as he ran from his car toward a building on the base. His name is not being released pending notification of family.
A Navy spokesman said the lightning hit near the same area where three sailors were struck by lightning in June 2000.
Not far from the base, one home in the new Oakleaf Plantation development was severely damaged by a fire that was attributed to lightning.
A home on Havenwood Road Middleburg lost a garage to fire, and a shed burned at a home on Branscomb Road in Lake Asbury.
All three fires were reported between 3:42 and 3:55 p.m.
The Clay County Fire Department said no injuries were reported to homeowners or firefighters in any of the fires.
