It's a prison that's dealt with a couple of violent incidents in the past. THIS time two inmates are SHOT inside the Columbia Correctional Institution in Lake City. 3 The exact scenario surrounding the shootings ... is still unknown. We DID confirm the shooting was NOT done by an officer. Now both inmates are in the hospital...recovering. Channel 4's Elizabeth Campbell is in Columbia County learning more about the incident. She joins us LIVE from the prison. 3 The warden is unavailable to comment due to the investigation but I did talk to him off camera today and he confirmed that this shooting did NOT involve an officer. That would mean that it is likely an inmate was responsible -- but he would not confirm that. He's now on the right path -- but got in trouble when he was younger and spent some time in prison -- so he knows what the system is like. He was shocked when he learned of Saturday's incident -- 2 inmates shot at the Columbia Correctional Institute in Lake City. It's been 48 hours, but officials aren't releasing much information. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released a statement Monday morning that saysPRE PRO - "We can confirm that two inmates were shot.They remain in custody with no life-threatening injuries. QUESTION - Did she talk specifically about what changes she thinks should be made to the system?ANSWER - She says prison guards aren't given many resources -- just pepper spray and a lot of courage.She says they need guns, safety vests -- something to help better protect the officers. She also says she would like to see florida prisons allotted more money to hire more man power and a better classification of the inmates This incident is just one of many at Columbia Correctional Institution. 2 years ago, a Columbia County inmate fatally stabbed Correctional officer Ruben Thomas. Inmate Richard Franklin stabbed Thomas 14 times with a makeshift knife. Last month - Administrators say 51-year-old Willie Watts attacked two officers. Both officers had minor injuries-- their names were never released.
