James Burkhart leaving Jacksonville to take over Tampa General Hospital

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The president and CEO of Shands Jacksonville Medical Center is leaving to take the same job with Tampa General Hospital.

James Burkhart has been affiliated with Shands since 2001 and took over the top job in 2010.

Tampa officials say they chose Burkhart because of his experience running large metropolitan hospitals with Level One trauma centers and affiliated with a medical school.

Tampa General has 300 more beds than Shands Jacksonville and nearly 3,000 more employees.

Burkhart will replacing the retiring CEO of Tampa General on March 4.
