UF fraternity suspended after hazing injury
Alpha Phi Alpha under investigation by campus police
Hazing accusations at the University of Florida
A fraternity at the University of Florida has been suspended for hazing and is under investigation by campus police.
University spokeswoman Janine Sikes says Alpha Phi Alpha was suspended after a student suffered injuries in what officials said was "serious physical hazing" over the weekend.
"With the nature of this investigation, there is simply not a lot that we can discuss at this time," University Police Department spokesman Maj. Brad Barber told the Independent Florida Alligator.
University officials said the injury was minor, but the allegations are still serious.

While the UF chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha only has 12 active members, UF President Bernie Machen sent a letter to all students Tuesday saying that the school will not tolerate hazing.
"I want to reinforce the university's prohibition against all forms of hazing - and ask each of you to help us guard against this dangerous and destructive behavior," Machen wrote.
The recent incident at UF happened three months after a Florida A&M University student band member died in what police said was hazing.
Given the attention the death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion has received, some students on the UF campus were surprised that hazing was still going on.
"I think fraternities have been trying to cut it out, and with all the stuff that happened at FAMU, they are trying to stop it," said Chad Simpson. "So it's pretty surprising that it happened here."
Others say that while fraternities will be slow to change, but college administrators will be less tolerant.
"They've been keeping it secrets for years," student Johnathan Paris said. "It's not the first time, and they were probably keeping an eye for it."
