Dashcam video released Tuesday records a conversation between Nassau County Board of Commissioners Stacy Johnson and a deputy who arrested her on a DUI charge Friday night.
According to a police report, a driver called 911 after seeing Johnson's vehicle run off the road and nearly hit another car driving north on Amelia Island Parkway. That driver followed Johnson's SUV until a Nassau County Sheriff's Officer volunteer took over and followed the SUV from the intersection of Blackrock Road and State Road 200 to the entrance of Sand Hickory Trail, where the 38-year-old Johnson lives.
A deputy then arrived, and a dashboard camera recorded the conversation in Johnson's front yard.
"Are you kidding? You know what's going on. This is like all political. I'm not even playing," Johnson said.
"No ma'am, it's not," the deputy said.
"OK," Johnson said.
"It has nothing to do about being political," the deputy said. "I can smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage (inaudible) from your breath."
"Really?" Johnson said.
"Sure do," the deputy said.
The police report says Johnson smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, and also staggered when she walked in front of officers. In the video, Johnson is heard refusing to take a field sobriety test, and she is placed under arrest.
"Do you not get the Ritz thing? Do you think I did that?" Johnson said. "Look at me. Just look at me. Do you think I did that?"
"Ms. Johnson, it has nothing to do with the Ritz," the deputy said.
"It does. Or you wouldn't have four cop cars at my house. You wouldn't. What don't you get about it?" Johnson said. "I'll take a field sobriety test. I'll walk. I'll take my heels off. I'm tired. I've (expletive) worked all day. I'll take my heels off. I'm not afraid. I hate this job. I hate this county."
Johnson recently had a run-in with Nassau County Sheriff Tommy Seagraves for another incident involving alcohol. A police report from March says Johnson got into an argument with a woman at the Ritz-Carlton bar in Amelia Island. Surveillance video caught Johnson being punched in the face.
Both women were given warnings for disorderly conduct, but the commissioner was later accused of trying to cover up the details of the dispute with Seagraves.
In the dashcam video, Johnson can be heard talking about a setup, and she repeatedly blames Seagraves.
"It's a setup. It's OK," she said. "He's 12 and he has a badge. It's OK. It's a setup. He's 12."
"It's all about politics. People can't handle me out here. They want to handle me, but they can't handle this," Johnson added. "This is such a setup. I so want my phone. I'm not even running and this is a setup. I mean, what do they want from me? To destroy me?"
