JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A 53-year-old Jacksonville man was sentenced to life in prison this week for the 2012 beating of another man.

Tyrone Powell was convicted in January on a charge of aggravated battery on a person older than 65.

In August, Powell attacked 67-year-old Allen Bailey. Bailey was picking up trash near his home when Powell walked up and started beating him. Bailey's jaw was broken in the attack. He also had a tooth knocked out and his head split open in the beating.

Powell has been designated a violent career criminal, habitual violent felony offender and a prison release re-offender. His criminal history dates back to 1988 and includes convictions for attempted second-degree murder, burglary to a dwelling, aggravated battery and robbery.

Powell was released from prison within three years of committing this crime.
