3 Tonight Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford met with neighbors on the westside who are concerned about crime in their community. Many wanted to know: What are police doing to curb crime in the area. Tim Pulliam is live tonight at FSCJ's Kent Campus where the meeting took place...Tim 3 The sheriff discussed the need for more police officers in general to make Jacksonville safer But he also highlighted that the crime here in the Westside is not as bad as some of the residents think. 00-1035-401'11-1'17Tonight on the CSheriff Rutherford laid out crime statistics to these residents who live in West Jacksonville, also known as Zone 4.Zone 4 He says between 2012 and 2013 violent crime went up 1% , which averaged to about 37 more incidents. Property crime went down 3% And overall crime down 3% Many of those who came out tonight said they were concerned that crime was going up.Leigh Ann Rassler/Neighbor 124314 In the past I may have gone for a run in the evening but now you know now I'm less inclined to do that.Leigh Ann Rassler says seeing the actually numbers eased some of her concerns. 124340 What is important for people to see is that crime is down as a whole, yes there are some pockets Sheriff Rutherford says one of the challenges in improving safety on the Westside is lower response times: Right now it's at 9 minutes and 3 seconds - JSO's target is 7 minutes. Rutherford says the city needs more officers - about 147, but because of budget cuts dating back to 2008 and now pension reform, he has to pull from his overtime budget to put extra officers on the street.A short term fix - neighbors say the city must change.Gayle Rice/Neighbor 124811 It sounds constructive. They have long days so someone said there's fatigue issues - so it may make it harder for them to do their job well. Also discussed tonight - a recent shooting at the Fat Kat Lounge.The sheriff says JSO will look at reviewing it's policy on police only being allowed to patrol the outside clubs but possibly allow them inside too.He also told the audience there needs to be more responsibility on club managers to provide tighter security.He wants to work with the city on legislation to provide safety at these nightclubs.
