February may be our shortest month of the year, but it's certainly not lacking when it comes to savings. This month you'll find deals on several necessities, but there are also things you shouldn't take to the checkout counter!

Thanks to Valentine's Day, some things are in high demand during the first two weeks of February. However, that doesn't mean you should have to pass them up. It just means you need to look for coupons and sales.

As for things to buy only with a coupon, Dealnews.com suggests jewelry, lingerie and expensive handbags.  Unless you can find a store-wide shopping pass that applies to V-Day worthy goods, they said wait until after February 14th when these usually drop in price by 50 percent.

Things you should be buying right now, winter coats home goods, big screen TV's and tax software.

As for things you shouldn't buy right now, a new phone tops the list. According to Dealnews.com, once the latest fleet of mobile models are released, we'll see even greater deals on all previous generations.

Also, wait to buy an iPad mini. If you can wait until at least late April or early May, then you can likely score a high-quality, refurbished model at the Apple Store. These will carry a 1-year warranty, the same as new units.

Keep in mind, Presidents' Day is right around the corner. It's the weekend of February 18. For those of you who love to save that 3-day weekend is the best time buy clothes, tools, bedding and furniture. Some will be as much as 80 percent off.
