Winn-Dixie, Jags team up to 'sack' hunger in north Florida
With one out of four children in north Florida not knowing when they will eat their next meal, Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. and the Jacksonville Jaguars are launching the Winn-Dixie Hunger Relief program in all its stores during the holiday season, according to a news release.
From now until Christmas Day, Winn-Dixie and the Jaguars are asking customers to help make a difference by donating funds at the point of checkout and by purchasing specially marked Winn-Dixie brand products, the manufacturers of which have generously donated to this program, according to the release.
Winn-Dixie has also announced a 40,000-pound food donation to Second Harvest North Florida to kick off the campaign.
Jaguars owner Shad Khan joined in on the announcement, along with Bruce Ganger, executive director of Second Harvest North Florida, and Mary Kellmanson, vice president of marketing for Winn-Dixie Stores Inc.
"I encourage all our fans to donate at your local Winn-Dixie store to help those who need it most," Khan said. "We'd love to see children in our communities receive the nutrition they need to start each day with a smile."
Winn-Dixie's Hunger Relief campaign will run throughout the grocer's five-state operating area to benefit 16 Feeding America-affiliated food banks, including Second Harvest North Florida.
