A person was hit by a driver in a parking lot across from the Jacksonville Landing early Friday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
It began about 2:15 a.m. when a series of fights broke out at the Landing around closing time, according to witness John Buskager.
"I saw a bunch of fights going on in front of the place -- about two or three of them," Buskager said. "I saw a girl get knocked out. Well, I shouldn't say I saw it. I saw her on the ground. From my understanding, she got knocked out or hit."
Witnesses said the man who knocked out the woman then got into his vehicle in a nearby parking lot while people punched him through the window.
"They're like, 'Hey, you're that guy who hit that girl.' He's like, 'I don't know what you're talking about,'" said Timothy Hobgood, who witnessed the incident.
"A guy tried stopping him. He ended up jumping on the hood. Driver slammed on the brakes. He rolled off," Buskager said.
Hobgood said he flagged down police after the driver ran over the man who tried to stop him from leaving.
"I ran over there and said, 'We need some help, we need some help, we need some help.' He said, 'I have backup on the way.' I said, 'You don't understand sir, this guy is dying,'" Hobgood said.
The person hit by the car was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in life-threatening condition, according to police. Witnesses said he was at the Landing celebrating his 21st birthday.
Police caught up with the driver about six blocks away and took him into custody.
Investigators have not released the identities of the driver or the victim.
Police said several witnesses leaving the country bar Mavericks may have witnessed what happened.
