Woman Accused Of Killing Pedestrian

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

A 43-year-old woman was arrested Friday on charges she hit a pedestrian with her car Thursday night and left the scene.

St. Augustine police said a man walking along the shoulder of U.S. Highway 1 at Rambla Street was struck Karim Almatin from behind about 11 p.m. Police said a woman told them the vehicle swerved off the road to hit Almatin, then speed away.

Almatin, from Ona, Fla., was transported to Flagler Hospital, where he died.

Detectives, assisted by a local car dealer and a crime-analysis database, were able to use a part of the car that came off when Almatin was hit to locate the the hit-and-run vehicle.

"They were able to give us a model and make on the vehicle that that part came from," St. Augustine Police Cmdr. Barry Fox said. "We were able to narrow it down to approximately, about 15 vehicles. While checking those vehicle, we were able to vehicle in question."

The vehicle's owner, Dorothy Campbell, from St. Augustine, was questioned and arrested.

Campbell was booked into the St. Johns County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide.

Officers were still not sure whey Campbell swerved to hit Almatin.
