Police: Ex-Boyfriend Shot Her Before Killing Himself
Published On: Oct 14 2011 02:32:48 PM EDT Updated On: Jul 22 2008 11:02:24 AM EDTA woman shot early Friday as she arrived for work at Crowley Maritime on Talleyrand Avenue has died.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Floacia Bell Brookins died of her injuries early Tuesday.
The 46-year-old woman was a longtime employee of Crowley.
Police believe her ex-boyfriend, James Lawson Williams III, shot her before barricading himself in a Northside home, then turning the gun on himself.
When the SWAT team surrounding the home in the 11000 block of Oak Lawn Road stopped hearing from Williams, they went inside and found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Brookins family said she once dated Williams, but when the relationship soured, he would not leave her alone.
Brookins' family said the woman feared for her life and nothing she did, including getting a restraining order, could keep Williams away.
On July 4, Williams was arrested after police said he pointed a gun at Brookins.
"They had a lot of domestic problems," Joel Bell said. "He stalked her for, like, a month. My brother-in-law was bringing her back and forth to work. I guess he finally caught her by herself and did what he did."
