A woman was arrested in South Carolina Saturday, charged with the murder and robbery of a 67-year-old Jacksonville woman.
Michele O’Dowd's twin brother found her body in her apartment at the Grand Reserve at Windsor Parke off Hodges Boulevard after she didn't show up for work on Friday.
"When I got there, the door was ajar and I knew something was wrong," said Phil Axt, O'Dowd's twin brother.
Jacksonville Sheriff's deputies detailed the gruesome scene Saturday.
"She had been beaten, strangled to death. Her apartment had been ransacked and her debit card had been stolen," Lt. Rob Schnoover said.
Police said it didn't take long for them to follow leads and arrest Patty Michelle White, 37, a family friend who O'Dowd had taken in a few months ago. White had recently moved back to her home in South Carolina.
"She came down from South Carolina to rob the victim, whatever took place inside the apartment went horribly wrong and she wound up beating and killing her," Schnoover said.
Investigators said after leaving the apartment, White took O'Dowd's debit card to a few ATMs and withdrew cash—transactions that were caught on camera. O'Dowd's family identified White in the surveillance images.
Police went to South Carolina and arrested White a short while later where she confessed to the crime.
White is charged with murder and robbery. She's in jail in South Carolina but will be extradited back to Jacksonville soon.
