A traffic nightmare on the Southside for much of the day ...but NOW ... it's back to normal. Shortly before 11 this morning: a four car accident at the intersection of Saint Johns Bluff Road and Beach Boulevard... It started with a police pursuit. It ended with one woman dead and three others injured. Channel 4's Chris Parenteau is joining us LIVE from the scene ... Chris, you spoke with the victim's fiance? 3 The victim's fiance did not want to be interviewed on camera, but told me that shortly before the crash, he was on the phone with his sister, who was a passenger in the car, and was trying to get his fiance to pull over.She was being pursued by police for a drug warrant just before the crash. 00-05 19-24 43-49VO JSO says they were pursuing this car westbound on Beach Blvd because they had a warrant for a violation of probation on drug charges, but because of traffic conditions, they stopped pursuing her.That's when the driver turned North on St Johns Bluff. The driver then made a u turn, heading southbound.SOT Melissa Bujeda - JSO 04:51 When she went through the red light, multiple vehicles were struck. The driver of the vehicle that went through the red light is deceased.VO The victim's fiance tells us that the child in the back seat of that car was his 9-month-old nephew. Police say he was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Robert Crawford was driving this white pickup truck eastbound on Beach Blvd through the intersection when he was hit.SOT 3:21 I was maybe 50 feet from the intersection when I got hit. I was trying to stop when I saw the white car.I just tried to avoid the accident. I thought I was in the clear, but then felt the impact.VO Because of the impact of the crash, this Silver Cadillac SUV ended up at least 5 lanes away from where it was struck.Crawford is thankful that the impact to his car wasn't much worse.SOT 1:44 I ended up where I'm up right there in the pole. It spun me around, knocked me around a little bit.But I was wearing my seatbelt.VO The damage to the Cadillac was so severe, the roof had to be removed to get the driver out, but witnesses say the driver was alert at the scene. Traffic Homicide investigators spent hours trying to figure out the position of each car before the crash and determine how fast the driver of the white Ford was going when she ran the red light.SOT 2:45 It looked like it was going really fast.Faster than the speed limit.2:11 I had the green light for some time. Traffic was going through the light at speed. I realized it was going fast and it was coming straight through the intersection. Traffic was a mess in this area for much of the afternoon, with the entire intersection and all three lanes of Beach Blvd eastbound closed.Now that it has reopened, traffic is just about back to normal for this time of day. Live on the SS, CP Ch 4, TLS Q: Chris, did police elaborate on why they STOPPED pursuing the vehicle?A: They said that because of the traffic conditions near the Beach and St Johns Bluff intersection, they stopped the pursuit of the woman.JSO says that they had the address of the woman they had a warrant for, so pursuing her further wasn't necessary.
