Abandoned car, shooting may be linked

Gold sedan found in ditch on Philips Highway

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police officers found an abandoned car on the Southside early Monday morning.  Around the same time, two people checked into Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening gunshot wounds.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers found the gray Chevrolet Impala in a grassy median on Philips Highway, just north of J. Turner Butler Blvd., around 2:30 a.m.

"No reports of gunshots here. They showed up to the hospital with gunshot injuries," said Officer James Carey with JSO.

According to a police report, Jay Byard, 25, and Derek Jackson, 26, were admitted to Memorial.  The report noted blood was found inside and outside the vehicle, and there were possible gunshot marks on the car.

The officer investigating the case spoke to the two gunshot victims, but did not provide details of how they were connected to the crashed car.

One northbound lane of Philips Highway was closed early Monday morning until the scene was cleared.
