Agencies search after report of plane down in river

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Multiple agencies searched the St. Johns River on Wednesday morning after the U.S. Coast Guard received an alert about 9 a.m. that a plane went down in the water south of the Buckman Bridge.

Jacksonville Fire-Rescue and the Clay County Sheriff's Office had boats in the water, but suspended the search when nothing was found. The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy are the only two agencies that continued searching past 10 a.m. and extended the search south to the Shands Bridge.

The search began after the Coast Guard received an alert from an emergency beacon on a plane.  The beacon typically activates when a plane crashes into water, but false reports are not uncommon.
