Alachua County deputy arrested on theft charges, fired

ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – An Alachua County deputy being investigated on theft charges has been fired.

Sheriff Sadie Darnell terminated the employment of Deputy Johnny Ashley on Friday.

Ashley has been employed with the Sheriff's Office since 2008 and was most recently assigned to the Court Security Bureau.

After developing probable cause, detectives said they have opened a criminal investigation on Ashley regarding theft.

The Sheriff's Office said a parallel Office of Professional Standards investigation into policies and procedure violations has also been initiated.

Once the investigations are completed, the criminal investigation will be presented to the State Attorney's Office, and the OPS investigation will go to the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
