Officer Arrested for Driving Under the Influence

ALACHUA, Fla. – Earlier Saturday morning, at about 3:30, ACSO received several calls regarding a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US-441 approaching SW Williston Rd.

Multiple law enforcement units from both the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and the Gainesville Police Department responded to the area and located the vehicle at the intersection of US-441 and SW Williston Rd.

The driver of the vehicle appeared to be unresponsive behind the wheel.

Deputies with the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office initiated a DUI investigation.

After administering a roadside field sobriety exercises, the driver, 23-year-old Hamza Ahmed Amer, was taken into custody for DUI and transported to the ACSO Jail where breath test results confirmed a blood alcohol content of .188.

Amer was hired by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office on September 28, 2015 and is currently assigned as a Detention Officer with the ACSO Department of the Jail.

Immediately following his arrest, Amer was placed on administrative suspension with pay pending the outcome of his criminal case and subsequent internal administrative investigation.
