Area events to honor our veterans

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Dozens of events are taking place across northeast Florida and southeast Georgia on and around Veterans Day:

Jacksonville Veterans Recognition Breakfast, 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., 1410 Gator Bowl Blvd. outside of Metro Park. Breakfast will honor Veterans before the start of the Parade.

Veterans Day Ceremony, 10 a.m., Francis Field, St. Augustine. Veterans of the Korean War will be recognized and honored. Speaker is Navy Rear Adm. Rick Williamson, commander, Navy Region Southeast, Jacksonville Naval Air Station.

Veterans Council of the Golden Isles honors Vietnam Veterans on St. Simons Island. The event begins at 10 a.m. with a parade along Malloy Street from the athletic fields to Neptune Park on the waterfront. The council will pay tribute to the 21 men from the area who died in Vietnam at 11a.m. at the Neptune Park grandstand.

Jacksonville Veterans Day Parade, 11:01 a.m., steps off from EverBank Field and proceeds west on Bay Street to the Prime Osborn Convention Center. Includes senior military officials, active-duty and retired military units, veterans groups, area high school marching bands, military organizations, decorative floats, giant balloons and JROTC units. Veterans Day Ceremony at Francis Field, 11 S. Castillo Dr., St. Augustine, 11 a.m. Re-enactors and static displays of military vehicles and over 20 Color Guards.

Veterans Day at the Park, presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3270, 1:30 p.m., Beaches Veterans Memorial Park. Includes live music, a drill team exhibition and a patriotic program at 2 p.m. Speaker is retired Navy Capt. Richard "Dick" Stratton and Alice M. Stratton, on "Veterans and the Community." Veteran's Day Memorial at St. Augustine Beach, 3-5 p.m. The event takes place at Lakeside Park Veterans' Memorial, behind the Beach Police Station, 2200 A1A South.

Veterans' Day recognition, 3-4p.m., at the Southeast Georgia Health System, 2611 Wildwood Drive, Brunswick, will include readings of letters to veterans. Attendees will get the opportunity to participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Southeast Georgia Health System Senior Center.

Veterans Memorial, 3-5 p.m., Lakeside Park Veterans' Memorial, 2200 Florida A1A S., St. Augustine Beach, behind the beach police station. Includes speakers and refreshments.

Concert to benefit the Missing in Action Project, 5-9 p.m., Green Turtle Tavern, 14 S. Third St., Fernandina Beach. Includes music and displays. (904) 219-3035

Veterans Housing Summit, Wells Fargo office, Springfield. Program to discuss veteran housing needs in Jacksonville.

Friday


Michael Rothfeld screens his documentary, "Vietnam: Service, Sacrifice and Courage," 5:30 p.m., University of North Florida's Student Union Auditorium. Features four Jacksonville Vietnam Veterans who also take part in a panel discussion after the viewing.

Sunday, Nov. 17


Military Appreciation Day, 1 p.m., EverBank Field. Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Arizona Cardinals. Military members and their families will be guests of honor for the game.
