Armada, city find $1 million for construction project

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Armada soccer team is close to getting $1 million from the city to be able to play at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

That money, which would be used to convert the Baseball Grounds to incorporate a soccer field, was originally cut from the budget. But agents from the soccer club worked with city administrators and found dollars that were not being used.

The money was in what is called a sub fund, which is for projects the city has completed without spending all the allocated cash.

Councilman Matt Schellenberg said that's the kind of money the city can spend.

"We are not objecting to moving money around, if they can find the source of cash," Schellenberg said. "Not borrowed money but cash that we have on board and in the little nooks and crannies, apparently the Armada found $1 million."

The city has formed a special committee to look at all of the projects to see what has been spent and what hasn't, in case there's more money like this out there.
