Arrest made in shooting death of 16-year-old

Police say teen shot, killed by man attempting to rob teen's friend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 51-year-old Jacksonville man has been arrested and charged in the Easter shooting death of 16-year-old Angel Alonzo at the Whispering Oaks Apartments on Atlantic Boulevard, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced Tuesday.

JSO said the shooting was part of an attempted robbery and detectives believe drugs were involved.

Samuel Vick, a convicted felon, showed up at an apartment in the complex and demanded money at gunpoint from a friend of Alonzo, police said. The friend, who police did not name, went to get help and Alonzo and another witness managed to get Vick out of the friend's apartment and shut the door.

Vick (pictured) fired a shot through the door, hitting Alonzo in the chest.

Alonzo was taken to UF Health, where he later died.

After the shooting, Alonzo's mother, Raquel Gomez, said her son had just started living at the Whispering Oaks complex a couple weeks before he was killed.

"My son always took care of me, was always worried and concerned for me. Why did you take him from me God?" Gomez said through her grief in April.  "Why did they they take him from me God? They should have killed me instead."

Vick is charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Vick was charged with 2nd degree murder in 1986. That charge was dropped. That same year he was also charged with aggravated manslaughter.

Vick has been in the Duval County jail since April on charges of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
