Avoid that office 'pain in the neck'

Chiropractor offers solutions to give you a pain-free work space

Is your job taking a toll on you - physically?  Dr. Andrew Bang, a chiropractor at Cleveland Clinic, says there are four quick fixes.  He says routine repetitive motions that are done at the office every day can often become a pain.

"Is my phone on the right side of me? So, I'm always doing this. You know, this repetitive stress. It's just like if you were a factory worker and doing the same job over and over again. You can cause repetitive stress injury," Bang explained.

Most people will experience back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, research shows about 38% of adults have low back pain and almost 26% suffer from neck pain any given year.

Simply sitting at your desk seems pretty innocent, but if you have poor desk posture you could cause or worsen neck, back, shoulder or wrist pain.
don't worry though, there are steps you can take to a pain-free work day.

First, your shoulders should be square with your computer screen.  Second, your head should sit on top of your shoulders so you're looking straight ahead - if you're tall you may need to move your computer screen up with an extender or even prop it up on books. Third, your feet should be flat on the floor or on a foot stool and fourth, you want plenty of low back support.

"You don't want your feet to be hanging. That starts to put stress on the lower back and if you find that your lower back is not touching the chair, then the last thing you want to do is add a pillow for some lumbar support," said Bang.

Simple changes to your routine may help alleviate pain from repetitive motion. You can also try moving your phone to the other side of your desk, using a headset for calls, or even trying a left-handed mouse.
