BAE Systems to lay off 200 at Jacksonville shipyard

NORFOLK, Va. – BAE Systems notified employees in Jacksonville on Monday that it will be reducing its workforce by about 200 jobs over the coming months.

The company employs about 800 people who work in two locations.

According to a news release, the workforce reduction is to align the company's workforce with a decline in commercial shipbuilding work in North Florida.

The company said it is experiencing reduced demand for Navy repair work at the Mayport Naval Station because of the Navy's changes to its ship maintenance plan.

"BAE Systems greatly appreciates the hard work and dedication of the employees who are impacted by this difficult decision," the release said.

BAE Systems is a leading provider of ship repair, maintenance, modernization, conversion, and overhaul for the Navy, other government, commercial and private customers.

The company operates seven full-service shipyards in Alabama, Florida, California, Virginia and Hawaii, and offers a highly skilled, experienced workforce of about 5,000 employees, eight dry docks, and significant pier space and ship support services.

The company also has commercial shipbuilding and module fabrication capabilities at its Mobile, Alabama, and Jacksonville shipyards.
