JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Chicken and ribs are making a difference in the lives of children at Saturday afternoon's Jacksonville Backyard Barbecue Championship.
The event is held to raise funds for the Glen Cook Memorial Scholarship for formerly homeless kids who are part of the Daniel Foundation and who are now going on to college. Channel 4's Cole Pepper is a co-founder of the event.

"We needed an idea to raise some money for the scholarship and my wife actually said, 'Hey, let's do a barbecue contest. It was a great idea," Pepper said.

"Daniel Memorial is a great charity and a great part of Jacksonville and it turned into a beautiful day and we're helping the kids-- can't go wrong," said competitor Russell Smith.
Judges scored chicken, ribs and pork entries from the teams to determine the winners.
In addition to the barbecue, there was also live music and games for the kids.
